Blogger earns national award for promoting
state parks
An Indiana blogger was named “Ambassador of the Year” by America’s State Parks for promoting the outdoors to other young adults.
Lance Gideon was one of eight volunteer bloggers from Indiana who wrote for the America’s State Parks Youth Ambassador program, documenting their experiences at Indiana’s state parks for the ASP website, AmericasStateParks.org.
In 2013, Gideon wrote 28 entries on the website about visits to Tippecanoe River, Spring Mill, Fort Harrison, Summit Lake, Whitewater Memorial, Mounds and Brown County state parks and Brookville Lake.
America’s State Parks said Gideon was a “true outdoorsman.”
Gideon, 22, is from Modoc and studied journalism at Indiana University. He has also worked as a gate attendant, laborer and security guard at Summit Lake State Park.
He received an Old Town kayak, paddle and life jacket as a prize for the award.
Americas State Parks is an alliance of public and private organizations established in 2009 to promote and enhance the country’s system of state parks. The Ambassador Program targeting young adults is America’s State Parks flagship program.

Two DNR veterans retire
Two long-time DNR employees who helped lead efforts to protect threatened wildlife and natural areas in Indiana have retired after a combined 57 years of service.
Lee Casebere, assistant director of the DNR Division of Nature Preserves, is leaving after 33 years as a full-time DNR employee. Katie G. Smith, supervisor of the Wildlife Diversity Unit, a part of the DNR Division of Fish & Wildlife, is leaving after 24 years. Both retired Friday.
“We’re losing two very dedicated public servants whose passions for conservation and wildlife preservation is unmatched,” said DNR director Cameron Clark.
Casebere supervised eight regional ecologists who managed the more than 250 state-dedicated nature preserves, and he oversaw the division’s prescribed-fire program. The division protects high-quality natural areas.
Early in his career, Casebere inventoried rare plant and animal species and is responsible for locating several high-quality natural areas, according to John Bacone, director of the Division of Nature Preserves.
“Thanks to his efforts, a number of special areas are protected today and for future generations as state nature preserves,” Bacone said.
This year the Conservation Law Center in Bloomington recognized Casebere with its Distinguished Career Public Service Award.
The Wildlife Diversity Unit that Smith led is responsible for the welfare of the state’s 750 non-game animal species, from mollusks to songbirds, including all of the roughly 150 state-endangered and special-concern species.
Smith’s accomplishments include supervising the successful restoration of peregrine falcons, ospreys and river otters to Indiana, managing the state’s first Wildlife Action Plan, and overseeing the acquisition of Tern Bar Slough in Gibson County, where the federally endangered least tern nests.
“She has tackled a variety of challenges facing wildlife in Indiana, from water quality to disease,” said Mitch Marcus, DNR’s chief of wildlife. “Her career has not only benefited numerous animal species, but also all the Hoosiers who appreciate our natural resources.”

“Area A” no longer part of Minnehaha
Fish & Wildlife Area
Effective immediately, “Area A” at Minnehaha Fish & Wildlife Area will no longer be part of the property and as a result will be off limits to public use.
All land at Minnehaha is leased from Peabody Energy, which is conducting an extensive wetland mitigation project on Area A. The DNR Division of Fish & Wildlife and Peabody agreed to remove Area A from the lease agreement out of safety concerns.
Area A was a 1,050-acre tract of bottomland forest, marsh and lakes on the FWA’s southwest corner and a popular spot for hunters, anglers and trappers.
Property manager Brad Feaster said the change is likely permanent and that currently there are no plans for Area A to become part of Minnehaha again after Peabody completes work.
The remaining nearly 5,000 acres of Minnehaha remain open as usual.
Minnehaha is located two miles east of Sullivan on State Road 54 and managed by Goose Pond Fish & Wildlife Area.

2014 annual passes now available
Annual entrance, boating and horseback riding permits for Indiana State Parks & Reservoirs for 2014 are now available for purchase.
The permits are available online at InnsGifts.com and at state park and reservoir property offices.
State Parks & Reservoirs entrance permits cost $40 for Indiana residents and $60 for out-of-state residents. Golden Hoosier Permits, which are entrance permits for Hoosiers age 65 or older, cost $20. Motorized lake permits cost $22, non-motorized lake permits cost $5 and horseback riding permits cost $20.
Permits and passes for 2014 are valid from Jan. 1 through Dec. 31, 2014.
Annual entrance permits make great Christmas gifts or stocking stuffers because they allow entrance into all of the Indiana state parks and reservoirs and gated state forest recreation areas.
Camping gift cards are available at property offices and at camp.IN.gov, and additional gifts for outdoors lovers are sold at InnsGifts.com, including a $99 holiday gift pack with an annual entrance permit, a year subscription to Outdoor Indiana magazine and an inn gift card, a value of $125.
There is an Indiana state park or reservoir within one hour of every Hoosier. Property descriptions and information about trails, programs and facilities are at stateparks.IN.gov.
For reservations at any of the state park inns, call 1 (877) LODGES 1 (1-877-563-4371) or visit IndianaInns.com. Reservations for camping can be made six months in advance at camp.IN.gov. Reservations will be accepted for Memorial Day weekend starting Nov. 23.

Indiana. State of Indiana Indiana Fishing
Indy Lakes pay lakes and RV Camping in Indianapolis is not recommended. I do not recommend fishing or camping at Indy Lakes. Something to do about the fishing pools.
They will tell a fisherman he has won in a fishing pool, and then refuse to pay out !
